Hello, I’m Alicia Ireland, and you’re listening to WPpodcast, bringing the weekly news from the WordPress Community.

In this episode, you’ll find the information from February 2nd to 9th, 2025.

The WordPress 6.8 version, which will be released on April 15, 2025, will focus on improving core features, especially those related to the block editor and user interaction. The update will introduce a smoother design experience with a focus on content editing through “Writing and Designing Modes.” Additionally, style and typography options will be improved, allowing for more precise customization for designers and developers.

In terms of usability, a “Zoom Out” mode will be implemented for editing, allowing users to apply styles to specific sections and view the changes in the context of the full page. Block controls will be enhanced by adding support for borders, spacing, and backgrounds, and users will be able to preview fonts in the typography selector, making it easier to choose the right style.

Moreover, site performance will be optimized through improvements in the Block and Hook APIs, while advancements in speculative loading and overall site speed will also be targeted. There will also be improvements in accessibility and continued support for newer versions of PHP, ensuring long-term compatibility and ease of use. Version 6.8 promises to be a significant enhancement in customization, design, and flexibility for the platform.

The RC 1 and RC 2 versions of WordPress 6.7.2 mainly focus on fixing bugs from the previous 6.7 release, including 35 bugs in total. These fixes address issues in both the WordPress core and the block editor, with specific improvements such as the restoration of accordion styles for themes and plugins, resolving problems with featured images on mobile devices, and adjustments to the post metadata panel to ensure its visibility in all rendering modes. A bug in the Twenty Twenty-Five theme has also been fixed.

Overall, these updates are aimed at ensuring smoother operation and stability for WordPress 6.7, with a focus on usability and block editor compatibility. The final release is expected on February 11, 2025, provided no new issues arise after RC 2.
